GRAND PRIX HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX
CIRCUIT HUNGARORING
DATE SUNDAY 14 AUGUST 1993
JOHNNY HERBERT DNF - FASTEST LAP 1:25.850
ALESSANDRO ZANARDI 13TH - FASTEST LAP 1:25.151
Friday 12 August - First Practice & Qualifying
Johnny Herbert: 21st - 1:23.361
"The car is very tricky the way it is at the moment. The physical layout
makes the rear end slow to respond, and once it gets to a certain point you
can't bring it back when it starts sliding. That's why I spun on my
first flying lap this afternoon."
Alessandro Zanardi: 20th - 1:23.306
"I had a brake problem throughout practice this morning. For some reason the
fronts weren't as efficient as they should have been, and I was trying to
adjust the balance as best I could. This afternoon we tried all sorts of
different things with the set-up, and we have a better idea which way to go
for tomorrow. The car is dfficult to drive the way it is, which is why I
had a half spin this afternoon."
Peter Collins:
"Johnny and Alessandro both did good jobs in qualifying with the equipment
and set-up at their disposal. Their times are well matched, and we can find
a few more tenths, but we really need more than that."
Saturday 13 August - Second Practice & Qualifying
Johnny Herbert: 24th - 1:22.705
"Once again the car is undriveable."
Alessandro Zanardi: 22nd - 1:22.513
"I tried very hard to put to put a good lap together, and managed to find
another two-tenths. It is so frustrating because the more changes we make
the more the car seemed to be on the limit, and it was easier to make
mistakes. I do feel more confident for the race, however, as we found one
or two things which should make a difference tomorrow."
Peter Collins:
"Obviously our car is better suited to circuits such as Hockenheim, where
the straights are a real help. Here, where corner is followed by corner,
it doesn't suit the 109's current weight bias. It makes it very difficult
to enter the corners quickly and to carry speed through them. Both
Johnny and Alessandro did good jobs this afternoon in a car that is not
conducive to driving with confidence."
Sunday 14 August - The Race
Johnny Herbert:
"I made a reasonable start and moved up a few positions. I got in front of
Alessandro and settled down into a rhythm, which was slow as my car wasn't
handling too well. At one point I was holding up about five cars, but it
wasn't my fault as the car wouldn't go any quicker. Sorry!"
Alessandro Zanardi:
"Right from the start my engine was on only nine cylinders, but it's great
that in those circumstances it could hold up consistently and still be
reliable enough to finish the race! The handling of the car pleased me
very much. It was the best that it has been all season. Even with one
cylinder down, my times were competitive with some cars which had no
problems. Obviously my race was finished after that first long stop I had
to make on the fifth lap, but I'm still very happy."
Peter Collins:
"This was another frustrating race for us, particularly as we had a much
better set-up for Alex's car than we were able to achieve during
qualifying. Alessandro drove fantastically well and showed true fighting
spirit to carry on pushing so hard despite losing so much ground. Johnny
also drove extremely well under consistent pressure from a number of
other drivers, but ultimately he too was unlucky to encounter electrical
problems. We now look forward to our test programme which will enhance
the handling further."
